Growing up, my family ran a small, humble farm in the countryside. It wasn’t a place of wealth or luxury, but it was full of life, thanks to a pack of loyal Chinese rural dogs—our companions, our guardians, and our friends. They weren’t pedigree dogs, but to me, they were family.

Over the years, because of limited resources and care, many of our dogs faced illness or accidents. Each time I returned home during holidays, I would often discover that one of the familiar little souls was no longer there. With every loss, my heart grew heavier. And yet, as time passed, I noticed something even more painful—some of their faces, their unique quirks, their presence—began to fade from my memory.

It was this realization that shook me deeply. These dogs had lived. They had loved. They had protected us and brought joy to our lives. They deserved to be remembered.
